Big shock on this one: Probably the mayor with the least appeal among blacks in New York City, is choosing to high tail it to California to meet with former Governor Pete Wilson for an endorsement. This is the Giuliani who encouraged the juvenile records of Patrick Dorismond, a 26-year-old black man shot by an NYPD officer, be released to the public.
Rudy’s endorsement from Wilson, a Republican with a more solidly conservative record than “America’s Mayor”, demonstrates the pandering Giuliani must do to get his nomination. Hey, what better way to win the nomination by ignoring minority issues and flying 3,000 miles to visit a guy who made his name by getting tough on illegal immigrants.
The story Newsday published today noted that the former Hizzoner was once highly critical of Wilson.
[When Wilson visited the mayor in 1995, Giuliani called Prop. 187’s cuts to illegal-immigrant benefits “inhumane,” and he disagreed with the anti-affirmative action Prop. 209.]
